Between each long straight link sits a small worked knot, so the line alternates between clean bar and dense twist the whole way round. It is a considerable amount of construction for a chain, and it is immediately obvious at close range.

Most chains repeat one shape and rely on scale for interest. Alternating two gives this a rhythm that a plain link never has, and it is the reason it reads as designed rather than bought by the metre.
